NY Striped Bass

Spring in New York

Thirty-two inches and growing!

We left the dock this morning and headed straight to the fish! The bite wasn’t gangbusters but definitely worth chasing. Mark did a very fine job of fighting these hefty bass for a quick and safe release on just about every drift! All bass were in the 30-34inch range looking healthy and strong broad shoulders.

There are still a few weekdays open in May. Give me a call if you want to slip out for some great fishing with little to no boat traffic!

J-bay fish action

It is taking all my strength to not divulge all the nasty details here of the fish that I encountered this weekend, but those secrets were hard earned and learned by t.o.w (time on the water)…

To avoid any unnecessary drooling, I will keep this report short… Was out on the prowl in Jamaica Bay this weekend and I’ve got to admit that I like what I saw… At most docks you will see “barely legal” sized bass on the cutting boards, but I can tell you first-hand that there are MUCH BIGGER fish in Jamaica Bay RIGHT NOW and they are catchable with the right technique and approach to these fish…

Call me ASAP to check on available dates, it only takes a few minutes to find out when the next shot at a mega striper could be on the end of your flyline!!!

Fly Fishing JFK

First Striped Bass of the year JFK New York

Catch a flight and catch a bass

Fly Fishing Jamaica Bay New York, NY

Early Season Fly Fishing in JBay can have some very productive fishing due to the lack of boating traffic which at times can ruin a good fishing spot…

This time of year, with the weather changes more rapidly than a NYC Taxi changes lanes, but with persistence and plenty of warm clothes you can get your spring bass on the fly without having to go very far… All it takes is the right fly, the right presentation (slow) and the right amount of patience. Some call it insanity to freeze in 40 degree temps, with wind chills feeling closer to 30 degrees F but the one thing in Jamaica Bay that will warm up just about anybody is feeling the strike from a striped bass, and knowing that it may be, just may be the fish of a lifetime…

HURRY and book your trip now as my available dates in May are almost full. Call me directly so as to not miss your next chance to catch striped bass on the fly in New York!!!

Striped Bass are in Jamaica Bay

Gunnel Reels - Hatch Outdoors
Under the Gunnels – Hatch Outdoors

The spring season is upon us…

…and the water temps are rising quickly as the striped bass begin to move into Jamaica Bay on the hunt for food. Luckily for the bass there are still herring inside the bay, and the bunker are gaining popularity as well. This past winter’s batch of fresh bunker and herring flies should do just the trick! Only a few days ago some lethargic bass were even playing cat and mouse with a nice sized popper fly creation that evolved from the tying desk of Kenjo Flies this past winter… Cant wait to really see this secret popper fly in pure form and action!

With Sweetpea locked and loaded, all systems are a go. Everything has been checked twice, and most things were even triple checked… Last Sunday was windy but proved to be a very good sea trial for the season, and Sweet Pea handled the wind waves just as expected…

This weekend I will be heading to Charleston, South Carolina for some much needed R&R with my ‘lil lady after such a very long winter in the city! It is safe to say we are definitely ready for some warmer weather!

There are still a few dates available in May so give me a call to make your reservation ASAP!

EEZ

Sure did love that rainstorm blowing through today. The last few days of weather have been rough water-wise but I tell you that the water temps were raised 2-4 degrees by that southerly blow. I couldnt have come at a more welcome time. Along with it came a great sigh of relief in knowing that spring is on it way. You can certainly hear and see the desperation in people to warm up and get OUSTIDE! I can say, I dont blame anyone for that!

Keep in mind as you are out fishing this year that the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) begins only three miles offshore! Lets respect our fishery and do our best to release those trophy fish alive and well… especially if you have fish at home in the freezer already!!!!!

Here is a very good article by Capt John McMurray. It is worth reading more than once!

Protecting Turneffe

While we sometimes don’t think that a place so remote and so beautiful needs protecting, it is critical that we support those organizations which help protect these remote destinations before they become giant trash heaps and before the fisheries are decimated by commercial fishing. Read more and other information about the Turneffe Atoll Trust by clicking on the photo… This organization is definitely the “good-guys” and it is great to see that they have collaborated with local law enforcement officials to help preserve the natural resources of Belize and surrounding marine environments…

Ready and Waiting

New York’s Premier Destination to Fly Fish for Stripers

With every sunny day hope is budding and the dreams of big striped bass at the end of my fly line come rushing back into my mind as if it were yesterday.

As I think back through all my fishing memories, it seems as though some of the best ones came from those times when out just scouting around on an early or late season trip and then all of a sudden, the fish reveal themselves to you, and in astonishment, you look around to know if anyone is watching. Not to hide the action, but to see if anyone is there to bear witness to the natural event of a fish feeding voraciously on your homemade fly, which sometimes its appearance is questionable as to exactly what is tied on the end of your line.

These are some of the best reasons to fly fish, in that the challenge doesn’t just end with catching a fish, but the challenge can also be in tying that saltwater fly that no fish would turn down.

So, until the fish arrive and the boat is in the water, I’ll be out there in the bay, on the water, field testing all the prototype flies that seemed to appear over this past winter. It is certain that some will return to the tying desk for further design and modification.

There have been rumors. Accompanied by minuscule reports followed by grandiose gossip and even a mirage or two! The striped bass are getting closer and it could be any day now that they appear out of thin air and start feeding on the herring and bunker that have taken a refuge in Jamaica Bay.

Prime time sure is getting close!!!
