Robert came back for a second helping and nailed quite a few redfish in Port Aransas Texas

Prime-Time is here on the Texas Coast for fly fishing redfish with the fly rod. We had a great last few weeks on the skiff in the bay and got offshore a time or two but the weather window barely cooperated out front. Good redfish drum and speckled trout catches were had in the bay and we got to tangle with tons of ladyfish and blacktip sharks out front. The tarpon evaded us on the one day we saw some. And with that, there is still much to look forward to as the fall seasons on the Texas coast transpire.

Chris caught this 22inch speckled trout while casting to a school of tailing redfish!

The water is looking great and all of the bait species are abundant. This means that the fishing will become greater and greater and it has already been pretty exceptional the last two weeks. Looking at the forecast, the fall seasons on the Texas coast are about to get kick started into high gear! This will incite great runs of redfish, black drum, trout, and flounder. Dates for September and October are still available!

Wade fishing Texas Reds during Spring Rains

Texas fly fishing for reds & drum is solid right now. As the Coastal Texas Spring Rains return, quite a few fish have returned to the marsh as well. And as expected, the marine life has shaped up nicely although it took a little time to balance. The fish are showing themselves up in the shallows now where there is an abundance of crabs and shrimp and a plethora of tiny fish. There are a few remaining dates open in June and July! Tailing Black Drum and Backing Redfish are both prevalent in select wading areas surrounding Port Aransas TX.

Congrats Bill on your first black drum on fly!

And in rainy conditions like this, the best way to deal with these variables in my opinion is to wade fish. This allows the fish to reveal themselves to us without detecting us as easily and we can take more shots at more fish without dislocating the majority of fish in the area.

This storm passed quick and we found the redfish backing in the grass and black drum tailing in the mud right after

In regards to rain systems like this one shown on Weather Underground Radar and Maps, Coastal Texas Spring Rains usually move in fast sweeping systems and in only a couple hours this one had passed and the winds laid down. Soon enough we found ourselves on the flat in calm conditions casting practically non-stop at backing redfish and tailing black drum with our fly fishing gear. So there are times when we might have a rain delay and occasionally a reschedule, but more importantly, you may miss out on some great fishing! My favorite part about the great outdoors is that it is not climate controlled.

We will adapt to our conditions and get on the fish despite the average weather. The fresh water that the rain introduces to our system is critical for healthy marine habitat and abundance of food for the fishes with target! Good news everyone!

Chasing them around the block

Granted, wading the Texas Marsh is not for everyone. It is highly recommended you be in decent physical shape. With sharp eyes and a good clean quiet cast you can also raise your odds of hooking up! Because it will most likely forever become known as the Longest Mile you’ve ever walked. Frankly, it can require someone with a strong spirit and will power, to not stop or give up. Fine tuning yourself into a fish stalking son of a gun isn’t the worst goal you could have! Rudy never gave up and in very tough conditions got to work on a handful of foraging redfish. Because of this, our catches are very rewarding in mind and spirit.

Post No Bills

Got out today with new client Tom after tropical storm Bill’s wrath had passed. The joke is that we got more wind/rain back in the month of May.

Return customer John had another good time before the storm with me chasing a few tailing/schooled up redfish on a super skinny tide.

Sight casted in 6″ of water!

Today’s long story written quickly is that Tom got his first redfish and flounder on the fly today and congrats to him for putting in such great effort! Never giving up always brings the reward and the highlight was when Tom ALMOST caught a 20-lb jack crevalle on a white crease fly!

Tom first Redfish on the fly

Tom first Redfish on the fly

We were running between spots and a surface disturbance caught my eye off in the distance. I decided to swing wide and go in for a closer look and found out that a wolf-pack of jacks were finning the surface, their entire dorsal fins were sticking straight up above the water and about 20 of them were just cruising on the surface. Tom got the fly in front of one and it crushed the fly and had him so surprised we didn’t get a good hookset. Then Tom did it again and got the fly out front and this time we were sure to get a good hookset! The fish took off for the horizon and took close to 100yds of backing with him and the entire school too. But while the spool was spinning feverishly in reverse I heard a clanking on the deck. I look down and see something shiny and when I pick it up I realive it was spool knob! Dang! we yelle! This fight just got alot tougher with no way to reel in all that line with a big jack on the other end! So we used the boat motor to chase down the fish with Tom manually stripping in all the backing the fish made a hard run before we could get close and ended up popping the 15-lb tippet. All in all it was another gorgeous day on the flats with a big jack on the Hatch surprise!

Something is missing in this photo

Winds and weather are steadily improving and the fish are beginning their staging patterns again to get back up skinny. Give me a call to book, I have a few week days open.

Donkey Jack Crevalle on the Fly

Please allow me to introduce you to one of the most powerful saltwater fly fishing gamefish of all time: DONKEY Jack Crevalle!

jacks, fly rod, saltwater, gamefish, port aransas, texas, fly fishing

DONKEY!!!

While drifting over massive underwater structures, it can be difficult to determine which fish you have hooked into initially. Mullet and menhaden fly patterns produced large jacks today and can even draw strikes from Ling (a.k.a cobia). Unfortunately, no Ling were sighted today. The tides were slightly outgoing early this morning and had the water cloudy near the normal structures where we find these monster fish. Nonetheless, I was extremely happy to have had this Beulah Bluewater 13/15wt paired with Hatch Outdoors 9+ in my hands when this donkey sized jack crevalle ate my fly today because upon the hookset this fish took off like a rocket and headed for Mexico!

While prospecting another area I caught a blacktip shark on conventional tackle, but 80-lb flourocarbon leaders are definitely not sufficient.

Blacktip on conventional gear… going for them on fly rod next

Tonight I will be adding some hay-wire twists to the boat bag (and maybe even a chum bag to ride)…

Call me ASAP at 361-500-2552 to book a charter if you want to test your endurance and get your knuckles busted.
